â
THAT FRIDAY, Matt picked me up in his car. âSo where are we going?â I said.
He grinned. âDisneyland.â
âOkay, wow!â I said. I was into it, but I was a little skepticalâI wasnât someone who especially loved Disney, nor had I felt compelled to visit Disneyland since moving to L.A. âIs this a thing people do, go on dates to Disneyland?â
He looked at me from the driverâs seat. âYeah, of course,â he said. âYou donât need to have kids to go to Disneyland.â
I knew that, of course, but I had always been confused by adults who went to Disneyland without kids. What was the point? But once we got there, I had to admit, it did feel pretty special. I took a photo of Sleeping Beautyâs palace, which sits at the end of Main Street, all lit up. I posted it on Instagram and captioned it: âTypical Friday night hang.â The night was fun and silly and we held hands as we walked around, and Matt introduced me to Dole Whip, and to cream cheeseâfilled pretzels in the shape of Mickey Mouse. Matt was a Disney expertâheâd been dozens of times since moving to Southern Californiaâand I surprised myself by actually caring about the little bits of Disney trivia he was telling me, like pointing out the names of the stores on Main Street and explaining that a lot of them were the names of Imagineers who had worked on the original construction of Disneyland. Was I now a person who cared about Disney Imagineers? I must really like this guy, I thought.
When we got back to my apartment, we made out on my stoop for a few minutes. Then I turned to him and said, âSo I know this is a little crazy, and normally I would never ask, but for some reason it feels totally normal to ask, so, um, do you want to come to dinner with my sister and her husband tomorrow night?â Karen and Steve were flying into town the next day, and we had plans to eat at an Italian restaurant in Venice.
He did. I went to bed that night, feeling giddy and excited, and wanting to talk to him on the phone until I fell asleep.
